This month, all my A to Z Challenge posts will feature a song that is on my personal list of “deep cuts.” These are songs that my husband often razzes me about, that there’s no one else who has ever heard of them or is listening to them, or they’re songs that possibly are just not that mainstream. If we are of the same era or run in the same musical taste circles, none of these may seem that off the beaten path, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t fun songs! Enjoy!
So, I might have to do a little bit of playing fast and loose with letters to make my posts fit. Today is one of those days, as I am letting my B stand for Ballard!

Russ Ballard gained some popularity in the 1980’s with a couple of his songs being used on the mega-popular TV series Miami Vice. That’s how I first learned about him.
Back ion those days, I loved to buy records, but I had a rule I set for myself: I would only buy an album if I liked at least 2 songs on it. Since I had heard 2 songs by him on Miami Vice, I went ahead and bought his album and ended up finding other songs by him that I liked! One of those songs is called, “Day to Day.” What I like about it is the feel of the song — it is wistful and a bit sad — and of course, the lyrics. I am a HUGE lyrics girl. So many songs in this world that I wish I had written…. But I digress!
Parts of the song, like, “You come to me in slow motion/Then you pledge your devotion…” for some reason create strong images in my mind, maybe paired with the music, that part looks ethereal when I imagine it. Or the words that say, “I read the news, the weather’s fine, who cares,” really strike me because when you’re in emotional pain, it seems odd that the world continues to go on around you and that people care about things that seem mundane, like weather, traffic, what to eat, etc.
I also really like Russ Ballard’s voice. It’s kind of smooth and rich, and he can have a bit of en edge to it when needed, like in the songs that were featured in Miami Vice. Anyway, give “Day to Day” a listen and let me know what you think!
OMG! I loved Miami Vice–drinking wine coolers and watching Miami Vice was about as cool as it got at my house :). Great song–I then binged a couple more of his from Miami Vice–Voices and In the Night. I totally remember the scene when Tubbs speeds across town to save Crockett—one of my favorites! Thanks for this!!

Oh yes, I like this eighties style. I used to listen to a lot of music like this. Russ Ballard is a familiar sounding name to me, but I can’t say I can relate it to any music that I know. I would listen to this stuff no problem.

I remember when Miami Vice was on and thought Don Johnson was hot but never watched the show. This song fits with the 80s vibe for sure.
